Preparing for your wedding and portrait photography

My goal is to make our time together fun, memorable and set you up for success before we meet! Here are some helpful tips, best practices, and details about my processes. I promise to go above and beyond for all my clients. If you have any specific questions not covered here - email me at: info@photosbymartina.net

BEFORE YOUR SESSION:

Q: What should I wear to my session?
A: Pick colors and clothing that is comfortable and look good on you! If you are relaxed and comfortable in your outfit it will show in your photos. Dress as if you are going out for a date! I recommend coordinating outfits / colors of clothing that compliment each other. Avoid wearing busy patterns or graphic shirts. Be sure to accessories to complete your outfit and include: jewelry, belt, pocket squares, tie, jackets, scarf, or a sweater.

For Ladies - Long, flowy dresses or skirts look amazing and they add movement to your photos. Long dresses tend to be very flattering and natural-looking. If a dress isn’t comfortable, go with nice dress pants. I highly recommend having your hair and make-up done. Be sure to include necklaces, rings or earrings to dress up your outfit. Consider having your nails done for those gorgeous ring shots! Heels look great for photos, however be sure to bring a comfortable pair of shoes to change into for locations that require more walking.

For Gentlemen - Suit or dress pants with a collared shirt work best. Brown or black leather dress shoes complement almost every look, whether you're wearing a full suit, blazer, or simply a collared shirt. Talk with each other to make sure that you're both dressed on the same level of formality. Guys - make sure there is nothing in your pockets by removing keys, cell phone, etc.

Q: Should I wear my glasses to my session?
A: When planning for your wedding, engagement or bridal session - I recommend ditching your glasses and wearing contacts instead. Your photos will come out better, and your eyes will be more visible without having to worry about the glare from the flash.

What to bring: make-up for touch ups, water bottle, hair brush, change of shoes for walking, and/or a second outfit if you would like two different looks for your photos.

Props: if you want to add an additional element - feel free to bring your own props. Some couples will incorporate a champagne toast, save-the-date signs, a picnic, or your dog, etc. Feel free to be creative and incorporate unique items that speak to your interests and personalities.

No matter the concern, know that you look incredible. When you feel comfortable and confident, it really does show!

DURING YOUR SESSION:

Q: How do I avoid looking stiff and awkward in my photos?
A: Between the two of you - we want to emphasize closeness and touching. Levels and angles provide more visual interest. For example, you may sit in a chair and have your partner stand slightly behind you. And finally, interaction is key. Tickle each other, tell jokes, whisper secrets to one another, cuddle and most importantly - have fun!

Q: How should I pose for my pictures? Where should I look?
A: Generally, I tell all my clients to pretend as if I am not there. The best photos are ones of you in the moment laughing, looking off to the side, looking at each other, etc. I find the most beautiful photos happen naturally when you are paying attention to each other - rather than the camera. We will get a few 'posed' photos of you smiling and looking at the camera too. If you aren't sure what to do, I will provide posing direction to help you look your best!

AFTER YOUR SESSION:

Q: We nailed it! Now when can I see my photos?
A: Within a few days of our session or your wedding, I will at times share a few ‘sneak peeks’ with you or post them to Facebook and/or Instagram.

Q: When will all my photos be ready?
A: For a portrait session, photos are ready within 1-2 weeks. For weddings, photos are ready within 4-6 weeks.

Q: Do you edit the photos? How are they delivered?
A: Yes, I do minimal photo editing. That means, I do color enhancements, cropping, and minimal retouching so you get the best works of art possible that document your love story. During our session and/or your wedding, I will try different set-ups, change up compositions, and solve any lighting issues. Afterwards, I select the best photos and work with each selection to bring it to its full potential. Your photos are then presented in a stunning, online gallery for viewing, sharing and downloading purposes.
